Leatherworking is a primary profession in World of Warcraft: Forever and goes up to skill 300 as in Classic. The Forever Hub data knows 308 recipes, 271 of them new in Forever and 81 from Merchant's Favor. This guide shows the cheapest route the leveling calculator finds with these recipes.
With your own auction house prices, a different start skill, trainer recipes only or without certain recipes, the Leatherworking leveling calculator works the route out again.
Why Leatherworking is worth it in Forever
With 308 recipes in our data, 271 of them new, Leatherworking is the largest profession in Forever – and the one with the most station recipes: 48 need the Tanning Rack, 91 the Sewing Machine. From skill 60 to 125 there are six leather sets for Merchant's Favor (Brawler's, Defender's, Stormrider's, Totemic, Trapper's and Wisdom's): belt, gloves, boots, hood and tunic cost 30 favor each without reputation, the leg pieces (125) also require the Tanning Rack. From 175 to 250 follow seven sets in leather and mail – Mender's, Prowler's, Skirmisher's, Skulker's, Skycaller's, Stalker's and Warden's – with gloves (175) and shoulders (210) for 60 favor at Friendly and bracers (225), boots (235) and belts (250) for 90 favor at Honored. At 300 the Grovekeeper (16 pieces), Spiritcaller (12), Grimstitch and Wildstalker sets wait at the Sewing Machine – all made of Fel Leather, whose source our data does not know.
The 37 unchanged Classic recipes now all depend on a station: Dragonscale Gauntlets, Wolfshead Helm, Helm of Fire and Dragonscale Breastplate (220–250) on the Tanning Rack, Devilsaur Leggings, Hide of the Wild, Chromatic Cloak and Onyxia Scale Cloak (290–320) on the Sewing Machine.
Skinning and Pristine Leather
Skinning is a must, and not only because of the 593 Light Leather on the shopping list: Pristine Leather, Pristine Hide and Pristine Scale are Skinning's scarce materials, and 79 Leatherworking recipes need the leather, starting with the favor belts at skill 60. Where Fel Leather and Fel Hide come from was left open even in the profession overview video.
The Camp Tent (skill 20, five Light Leather) raises rested experience to 5% of a level and replaces no class buff – it fits in any camp. The Tanning Rack (140) makes certain reagents according to the client text; in our data that is the Cured Rugged Hide (trainer, 225). The Sewing Machine (300) needs an Undeath Engine. Legacy points come at 150, 225 and 300; the 81 favor recipes cost 4,620 favor in total according to the favor guide.
Trainer ranks
Without the next rank the skill stops at the cap. Each rank is taught 25 points before the end of the previous one:
- Apprentice: skill 1–75, from character level 5
- Journeyman: skill 50–150, from character level 10
- Expert: skill 125–225, from character level 20
- Artisan: skill 200–300, from character level 35
The route from 1 to 300
Without prices the calculator sorts by reagents per expected skill-up, trainer recipes first: about 367 crafts for 275 skill points, rounded up – with luck you need fewer.

New recipes in Forever
271 of 308 recipes are new in Forever. The trainer teaches one of them, 81 are sold for Merchant's Favor by the trade factions and 189 come from recipe items. 139 recipes need a camp station: the Tanning Rack (from skill 125) and the Sewing Machine (from skill 270).
For the camp, Leatherworking makes the Camp Tent (from skill 20), the Tanning Rack (from skill 140) and the Sewing Machine (from skill 300).
How the calculator works
Colours follow the Classic rule (orange from the learning skill, grey from the trivial skill), the skill-up chance in yellow and green the common community approximation (grey − skill) / (grey − yellow) that Blizzard never confirmed. For every point the calculator picks the recipe with the lowest cost per expected skill-up; the formulas are explained in the calculator under "How it is calculated".
20 recipes have no trivial skill above their learning skill in the data and are left out.
Pitfalls on the route
- Armor kits eat Alchemy. The Forceful Medium (80–110), Forceful Heavy (135–166) and Mystic Thick Armor Kit (185–221) need 130 Elixir of Minor Strength, 72 Elixir of Giant Growth and 102 Mana Potions – Classic Alchemy recipes that are not in our data. The base kits are unchanged trainer recipes; the shopping list lists them as purchases, but you make them yourself.
- The Tanning Rack comes after the first recipes that need it. The favor leg pieces require it from 125, but you can only build it from 140; the video says 150. In the route the Gem-studded Leather Belt (166–185) is the first station recipe.
- Four Wolfshead Helms for four points (221–225): 18 Thick Leather, two Thick Wolfhide and eight Wicked Claws each. Better stay with the Mystic Thick Armor Kit, which only turns grey at 225.
- Fel Hide and Pristine Scale are in the Forceful Rugged Armor Kit (235–249) – 15 of a material with an unknown source. Switch to the Blue Suede Shoes (235–275), which only cost Rugged Leather, Rune Thread and Blue Dye.
- 116 Heavy Scorpid Scales for the Charged Scorpid Bracers (255–282). Without scorpids, take the Blue Suede Pants (255–295) or the Blue Suede Belt (270–310).
20 recipes have no trivial skill: the armor (80), pants (105) and helm (130) of the six favor sets, the Winter Boots and the Sewing Machine.
